Overview
This book design project interprets Manacled through a visual and material lens, translating its complex themes into a cohesive design system. The narrative’s tension between memory, trauma, and love informed every design decision, from typography to material choices.
The cover design emphasizes contrast and restraint, pairing minimal imagery with layered textures to suggest both confinement and intimacy. Interior typography was selected to balance readability with atmosphere, using subtle shifts in hierarchy and spacing to mirror the fragmentation of memory throughout the text. Marginal details and recurring graphic elements function as visual motifs, reinforcing the cyclical and haunting qualities of the story.
Attention was given to production details such as paper stock, finish, and binding, treating the book as a tactile object that embodies the novel’s weight and emotional resonance. The result is a design that not only presents the text but also amplifies its psychological depth through a considered and immersive reading experience.
